Up until 2022 mtrl.bike was known as Dutchfiets. Our dream has not changed a bit, but our ambitions have. mtrl reflects our vision on the product and is better suited to spread positive change around the world.

2014: The Idea
During his engineering curriculum, Johannes has an idea so powerful that it keeps him awake at night: a bike from recyclable plastic.

2015 : 1st Prototype
In his dorm room, Johannes builds his first prototype to show it can be done. This results in press coverage, innovation awards and even more ambition to make his dream a reality.

2016 : Crowdfunding
A crowdfunding is set up to produce 100 bikes. Within six days, it reaches the goal and enabled him to produce 125 bikes.

2018 : Scaling up
Due to increasing demand and publicity, Dutchfiets is able to enter a new phase with an investor, more people and more possibilities.

2020 : Innovation 100
The more our bikes are seen on the streets and in magazines, the more our efforts are rewarded by institutions like the Dutch Chamber Of Commerce.

2020: Generation 3.0
More and more parts are made in-house, enabling us to create new prototypes in days instead of months. Besides incremental changes, the bike evolves on a bigger scale: a new generation is born.

Dutchfiets joins forces with igus, a leading supplier in advanced motion plastics with 2,950 employees worldwide.

2022 : Generation 4.0
Our latest model, featured extensively on the website, is the crown on seven years of researching, prototyping and testing.

Because of the local production process and crew, we’re able to prototype new ideas within days instead of weeks.
